Grandma
“Is there something terribly wrong with me?”
I sigh and look up from my book. In the evening light my grandmother stares back at me, utterly unaware that it’s the third time she’s asked in as many minutes. Complex maps of wrinkles frame her wide eyes, each crease charting the grief, joy and laughter of a lifetime she is slowly forgetting. I look at her and I remember the wit and spark that used to punctuate her speech. I remember the way she used to strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere; how she’d find wonder in the simplicity of everyday life. Her curiosity, her sense of adventure, her love of the worl

The Coffee God
The Coffee God behind the counter shuffles foot to foot, a dance of steam and espresso. Black painted fingernails, inch gauged ears and a gray striped sweatshirt, hood crooked on his back. There's a cigarette tucked behind one ear; it bobs and twitches with each step.
“Non-fat caramel latte,” he calls, just as he always does, part of a spell, part of a mantra, toneless (just a tuck at the end). I reach. He looks up.
The espresso maker hisses.
There's something like a grin, something like a spark, something like a shared secret linked eye to eye. When he passes over the drink (rough cardboard sleeve

This was another one of my attempts to write a story for my school's literary magazine. I didn't succeed, but I continued anyway. Like my other story, The Potter's Den, there are geographical and historical inaccuracies, but it was meant to be a short 1-page thing so there wasn't much time to do research.
This is based on historical events (e.g. the massacre in Nanjing during World War II) and the use of captured women by the Imperial Army as "comfort women".
This is probably my most controversial short story yet, since it touches on sensitive subjects of World War II. I mean no disrespect to any one whose ancestors lived during that difficult time or who were in any army at the time. It was simply an idea that I got from a foreign film I briefly saw on French TV that took place in China in the winter, where a man was exercising outside in the snow. In the film, there is a disfigured woman who hides her face with bandages and has a baby with her, only to die later on. I don't know the name of the movie, but it is really good.
Finally, I apologise to all tai chi practicioners if my representation of tai chi is not accurate, but I've never practised it (I want to, though).
Comments and suggestions are welcome, but if you don't like it, please no insults.

EDIT:
It turns out the film that was on French TV was actually a Korean film called Pom yŏrŭm kaŭl kyŏul kŭrigo pom (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring) which takes place in Korea before the civil war there. It wasn't Chinese and the main character was not practising tai chi at all.
Oh well.

When I first logged on, I noticed all these comments congratulating me for the Daily Deviation. "What are you talking about? It's only a DLD" was my first thought...
It's been over two months and I still can't get over it. After 5 years on this site...a heartfelt thank you to CelestialMemories for suggesting it and DorianHarper for accepting it!
EDIT 3:
A huge shout out to for pointing out that my use of Pinyin was historically inaccurate for the time period. I have now changed the names in Chinese to follow the Wade-Giles style of Romanised Chinese.
EDIT 4:
I intend to submit this one for publication and have changed many details, such as the description of tai chi. While I am nowhere near proficient in tai chi, I know more about it now to have a less romanticised view. Or maybe not.
The baby's name has changed as well to Bai Lian, which means White Lotus.
