High School Graduation 2009, A New Beginning

Description

A little comic book like collage of my graduation ceremony from High School. It took place in the morning in front of the Great Sphinx of Gizah and the Pyramid of Khafre.

One of the happiest days of my life. The day before, the class of 2009 of CAC (Cairo American College) was invited to see Barack Obama's speech to the Muslim world entitled "A New Beginning"

The video of it is on YouTube:

And here is a transcript of it on the NY Times:

Both events were a sign. They were a sign of big changes for the world. But for me, it was symbolic of a new life and a chance to start again. Somewhere only the future knew.

When the principal ended the ceremony, I threw my hat up in the air and yelled "YATTA!" as loudly as I could. I didn't care about the stares I got or the laughter that followed. I was just so happy to be alive and to start again.

I just love this. My friend had recently traveled back to Egypt for a family wedding and I was surprised seeing his pictures at the size difference in the Sphinx and the Pyramids, so many times the pictures we are deceiving in size, more a forced perspective thing (I think that's what you'd call it!) It makes it look like the Sphinx is so much bigger than it is...oh and I know it's big, but not in comparison. But I love seeing pictures like this (and the wedding) I think there is such a unique beauty in seeing 'old and new' mingled - and as you said a symbolic new life.
