The setting sun left a faint golden halo in the distant horizon, like a child peeking over the edge of a bed. The slowly darkening sky brought out fading shades of pink and orange. And the heat of the day was replaced by a gentle breeze, blowing against faces and bringing sweet relief from the day's work. The kind of summers in Resembool that Edward Elric still enjoyed, long after his childhood.

In the distance, he spotted a figure seated by a tree near the remains of his old house. The setting sun made shadows of her figure, but even in the fading light, he still recognized his childhood friend, Winry Rockbell. He felt a pang in his heart, the same kind he had every time he saw her since he was 15. He hesitated for a moment, staring at his right arm. It had finally been restored during his voyage back from the other side of the Gate, as was his left leg. He still kept his prosthetic automail limbs as souvenirs, however. After living for so long with them, he found it hard to part with them.

His heart pulled him towards her with invisible strings as he walked over to the tree where she sat. There had been something on his mind for such a long time, and now that his ordeals were over, there was no better time for him to tell her.

Find me here,
And speak to me.
I want to feel you,
I need to hear you.

He looked back at the front porch of the house where he and Alphonse had been living since their mother died. His eyes eventually found their way to the balcony above the front porch. The lantern that Winry kept was still there, on the ledge. He gave a sigh of happiness at the memory of their first time back in Resembool since they left for Central. After Winry and Auntie Pinako fixed his automail, he sparred with his brother Alphonse until after dark. Winry waited for them on the balcony lighting the lantern on the ledge to remind them when it was time for them to go home, just as his mother had done before she died. A small tear ran down his eyes as he savoured that fond memory once more.

You are the light,
That's leading me,
To the place,
Where I find peace again.

His pace quickened as he lost himself in his reverie and before he realised it, he was standing next to her. She still didn't seem to notice him despite their closeness. He took a small breath and opened his mouth to speak...nothing came out. He steeled himself and tried again, this time producing a quiet, "Hey, Winry".

She sat up with a jerk as she turned to face the sound of her childhood friend.

"Hey, Ed," she returned the greeting with a smile "What are you doing out here?"

"It's a beautiful evening, and I saw you here. Thought I'd sit a while with you," he replied.

"Go ahead, have a seat," she edged herself to the side to leave him a space.

He sat down next to her, laying his back against the trunk of the tree. A silence passed between them and Ed was beginning to despair. There was so much he had kept from Winry since he was 15. As time passed, so many things occurred between them and his feelings for her had intensified. He missed her like crazy when he found himself trapped on the other side of the Gate. And yet now that he was home, next to his beloved friend and the love of his life, he couldn't find the words to convey exactly what he meant. Finally, he mustered his courage and looked at Winry seriously.

"Winry?" he said finally, while she looked at him "Winry, there's something I need to tell you...but the thing is...I'm not sure where to start."

"Just say what you mean, Ed. I'm listening," she looked at him, giving him an encouraging smile.

You are the strength,
That keeps me walking.
You are the hope,
That keeps me trusting.
You are the life,
Into my soul.
You are my purpose,
You're everything.

And how can I stand here with you,
And not be moved by you?
Would you tell me,
How could it be,
Any better than this?

"I many things happened to me. After everything that happened here...I got lost on the other side. I finally understood why Dad left...and I met him again...only to lose him. His last act proved more than anything how much I meant to him. I thought I lost Al...But I found him again," he started, looking over at his childhood friend. She was still looking at him, waiting for him to finish.

"Go on, Ed," she encouraged gently.

"Winry...what I'm trying to say is...I lost so much and had to go through hell to get it back...and...I..." the alchemist could feel the lump forming in the back of his throat building up like an apple was struck on its way down. Winry looked at him again, this time more intensely.

Her curiosity glowed on her face, even in the dying light of the sun. In the moments that followed, neither he nor his friend noticed the darkened clouds floating above their heads. The clouds that inevitably meant rain, and heavy rains to boot. He opened his mouth to speak, only for a loud thunderclap to drown out his voice. Within a few seconds, both the former alchemist and his friend were bathed in raindrops the size of stones. Winry let out a surprised cry and Ed shut one of his eyes as a raindrop the size of a ping-pong ball fell on his face.

"Uh...maybe we should hold that thought. I'll tell you when we are indoors," Ed suggested, reaching for Winry's hand.

"OK," she replied, accepting his hand and running by his side.

They raced towards the house, laughing as the rain bathed them in warm water from the sky. Oh, man, if I had known it was going to shower this hard, I would have brought some shampoo! Ed thought to himself. At length, they reached the house, where they slipped out of their wet shoes, leaving them at the entrance to dry. Ed let Winry go upstairs to get in a warm bath before she got a cold while he grabbed a towel from the cupboard near his room to dry his hair. Within 20 minutes of sitting on the chair near the fireplace, Winry came down in a bathrobe to tell him the bathroom was free.

He climbed back up the stairs to the bathroom to run his bath, waiting with impatience. As he undressed and climbed into the steaming water, he hoped that he would not miss his chance to tell Winry exactly what he wanted to before the storm struck. He emerged from the tub as the bathwater cooled down, wrapping himself in a towel before he went to his room to get dressed. When he finally came down, he found Winry by the fire, sipping at a mug of tea. He stopped halfway down the stairs to watch her, leaning on the banister. The mere sight of her made the storm that raged outside disappear from his thoughts, and brought him a peace of mind that he hadn't felt since he was reunited with Al, in his original body.

You calm the storms,
And you give me rest.

You steal my heart,
And you take my breath away.

He continued down the stairs as furtively as he could to approach Winry from behind, to watch her as closely as he could without alerting her of his presence. He was standing so close to the forbidden fruit, the apple of his eye. How could he not feel the pang of desire that made his heart hurt? His eyes closed and he smiled to himself to alleviate the yearning he felt before he approached her again, this time stepping into the light of the fireplace to make his presence known.

And how can I stand here with you,
And not be moved by you?
Would you tell me,
How could it be,
Any better than this?

"Hey," Winry greeted him with a smile.

"Hey, Winry," he spoke softly before taking a seat next to her on the couch.

For a while he didn't say anything but looked in front of him, clasping his hands together. With a lot of effort, he spoke up.

"How about that rainstorm, huh? We got creamed!" he laughed.

His companion nodded in agreement and let out a small laugh. When the laughter died down, he hoped that he wouldn't waste his time with the same small talk that he would muster. He could only go so far with the wanting. Fortunately, Winry came to his rescue.

"Hey, Ed?" she said to get her friend's attention.

"Yeah, Winry? What is it?" he answered.

"Was there something you wanted to tell me? Before the storm hit?" she questioned.

"Yes. Yes, I wanted to...tell you something...important..." he began, the same anxiety slowly tightening its grip on his chest and on his voice.

"The thing is, Winry...I finally got my arm and leg back. And Al finally got his body back. But...I can't help but feel like something is missing. I may not need my automail anymore, but...I still...I still need..." his voice trailed off and his mouth felt dry as he swallowed.

But he clenched his fists and took a long gasping breath. The excruciating pain of his arm and leg being torn, the tears he cried at his mother's funeral, the image of Alphonse's body being swallowed up by those dark tendrils, the weak smile his father gave him as he died, and the outstretched arms of the gypsy girl who loved him all flared before him as he mustered his courage.

"Winry...I just...I love you," he finally choked out.

He took a glance at the shock that was written on her face. She could hardly believe what she was hearing. She didn't say anything for the longest time.

"Winry? I said...I love you. I always have, even if I never showed it. I never want to lose I lost Mom, and Dad, and I almost lost Al," Edward continued, as if his courage would fail him if he didn't speak his mind as quickly as he could.

Winry still sat there, still taken aback at his revelation. Although this moment had always been in her dreams, since the day Ed came back from the other side, she never once envisioned it this way. Never in a million years could she have hoped that this scene would play out in real life. The memories of her childhood with Ed, the games they played, the annoying fights that Ed would pick with her, when he broke his automail, they all came flashing back in front of her eyes. The projector in her mind showed her the way she was, years before when she cried in front of him in Rush Valley, before his old teacher showed up. Her eyes became blurry once more, and she felt her hands tightening, bunching up the fabric of her summer skirt. She let out a small whimper, making Ed gasp and stiffen his body. He put his hand on her shoulder and turned to face her.

"Winry?? Winry? Oh, God, Winry, I'm...I'm so sorry...I never meant to..." he stumbled over his words. He cursed his tongue, the way he could be so tactless sometimes. All he wanted was to love her, to tell her as much. He just...

His thoughts were cut short when she abruptly propelled herself forward and wrapped her arms around him, just as she did when he got back from the other side, but with greater passion. She held him tightly, letting her tears of relieved joy soak his white shirt.

"I love you too, Edward Elric," she breathed out his name, letting her soft breath cover his ears and echo in his brain.

He slowly put his arms around her waist, pulling her closer to him. She rested her head on his shoulder while he rested his head on hers. He stroked her soft golden hair with his right hand, no longer heavy and numb. The recovery of his right arm felt so much sweeter, now that he could feel the silken locks that sifted through his fingers. Winry breathed softly and seemed to purr contentedly as his hand gently massaged her hair. She lifted her head long enough to face her childhood friend, looking him deep in the eyes. His own golden orbs captured every detail of the face in front of him. Her blue eyes that seemed to capture the light of the fire, the softness of her facial features, and the longing smile that brightened her face materialised before him. Before either of them knew what they were doing, their faces got closer, finally joining each other in a chaste kiss. They kissed again, this time prolonging and putting more energy into it. There was no turning back now for Ed and Winry this time. They were in love, and this was only confirming it. To hell with Equivalent Exchange, Edward thought, there is nothing that could possibly be traded for this moment, nothing that could compare. They belonged together. They wanted and completed each other, automail or no automail.

Because  you're all I want,
You're all I need,
You're everything, everything.

You're all I want,
You're all I need,
You're everything, everything.

As they kissed again, Edward's hands unconsciously roamed around Winry's body. He kept his right hand on her warm and soft cheek, relishing every sensation that felt so new to him after such a long time of having a metal hand. His left hand traced the contours of her shapely shoulders as well as her slender waist. The blonde girl's hands were just as busy, exploring every groove and angle in the former alchemist's well-developed frame. They joined each other in one last kiss before Edward started to direct his attention to her graceful neck. His lips pecked and nibbled at her soft skin, making her gasp in surprise and pleasure. He soon stopped, allowing Winry to return the favour. She teased his neck with small deliberate kisses, feeling his breath rise in his throat and his body become rigid with the mounting delight he was feeling. Her lips also nibbled at his neck before she slowly put her hands in his shirt.

He motioned for her to stop with his forefinger before drawing back. Winry's look of confusion was soon replaced with breathless admiration as he turned around and languidly unbuttoned his shirt, letting the white fabric slip from his shoulders and float to the ground. He lifted his arms up to lazily stretch before turning his head over his shoulder. He teased her with his gaze and his subtle smile, beckoning her to approach him. He turned his head forward just in time to feel Winry's slender arms encircle his waist from behind and her head rest on his shoulders. He sighed in delight as she kissed his neck and shoulders before turning his head to join her in an impassioned kiss. His knees felt weak and he thought that he might drop down to his knees. As if she read his mind, she hugged him closer to her, and they melted into one figure. The feeling of her hands on his chest and abdomen excited him and he turned around to kiss her again with renewed energy.

Winry broke away from his grasp, motioning with her head to follow him upstairs into her room. He followed her slowly up the stairs and along the corridor before she stopped him at her door.

"Wait, just a second. I'll tell you when to come in," she said, with a playful gleam in her eyes.

Edward nodded, biting his lip in anticipation while she closed the door. He waited outside her door, half tempted to open the door or peek in the keyhole to see just what she was up to. Her voice later resounded through the door, breaking him out of his thoughts.

"Come in," he heard her say before opening the door. He stood near the entrance in spellbound silence at the sight of his beloved young woman.

Winry twirled on her bare feet as she looked at him. Her summer attire had been replaced by a thin white nightgown that just reached her knees, and the aroma of her perfume hypnotised him. She walked over towards the awestruck alchemist, planting him a soft kiss on the lips. He kissed her back, not caring where his hands went. After living with a metal hand for nearly 10 years, he was not about to pass up this opportunity to feel her cool skin on his fingertips and his chest, to breathe in her fragrant scent.

She took him by both hands before retreating to her bed, kneeling in the middle while he sat on the edge and shed his black trousers, leaving him clad in a pair of blue shorts. He turned towards his beloved once more, hugging her and letting his legs entwine with hers. He loved how she fitted so neatly in his arms, how his head rested comfortably on her shoulder, and how her short fingernails softly stroked his cheek. They turned on their sides to look deep into each others eyes, smiling as they did.

Would you tell me,
How could it be,
Any better, any better than this?

Her slim curved figure felt so comforting now, and he cursed himself for childishly deriding it when he was younger, much to her anger. He planted a soft kiss on her cheek before he stroked her cheek. They clasped each other's hands, lacing their fingers together as they pulled each other closer. Their foreheads touched briefly before he took her chin by his thumb and forefinger, giving her a series of languid kisses.

"I love you, Winry. I always have, metal arm or not," he whispered sincerely.

"And I love you, Ed. With all my heart," she echoed.

He lay on his back, looping his arm around his beloved as she nuzzled him. Their romantic energy was spent, and it wasn't long before they drifted off to sleep. After so many years of pain, heartache, and guilt, Edward Elric was finally free. Free to be in the arms of his angel. No amount of alchemical knowledge or powers could ever explain how he felt or come close to the sweet bliss he was in. It can't get any better than this, he thought to himself before he wandered into the realm of sweet sleep.

Would you tell me,
How could it be,
Any better than this?
Hey everyone!

Got another fan fiction, but this time in another one of my favourite fandoms: Full Metal Alchemist.

The idea for this fan fiction came to me one summer, and I started working on it in the summer of 2009. Then University started, followed by several other stories and poems. And this poor little guy languished in my computer for ages. Until now! :happybounce:

For those of you who are slightly confused with the plot, this fanfic is based on the 2003 anime of Full Metal Alchemist, as opposed to FMA Brotherhood. More to the point, it is loosely based on the events of the Full Metal Alchemist movie, Conqueror of Shamballa.

I've taken a few liberties with the plot, so that Ed actually returns to Amestris after the events of the film, and with his original limbs intact. The film isn't quite like that.

This is my first Ed x Winry fan fiction, and hopefully not my last FMA one.

I hope you guys enjoy it. Comments or suggestions would always be appreciated. :aww:

Enjoy everyone!

Rated: PG-13 for kissing, some clothes being shed, nothing too suggestive though (at least, I don't think so).
